“Sa Kaeo is a provincial capital town in eastern Thailand. It is about 200kms from Bangkok. The Thai-Cambodian international border post at Aranyaprathet-Poipet is another 60kms. There are air-conditioned buses from Bangkok’s Ekkamai and Mochit bus stations to Sa Kaeo. These depart frequently during the day and take about four hours to get here.
Demand for seats on buses is high close to the weekend or at holiday times. It is a good idea to pre-book online if travelling at these times. The town’s bus station is just outside the centre. There are usually a few motorcycle taxis and tuktuks waiting at the station to meet arriving passengers.
The nearest public airport to Sa Kaeo is back in Bangkok, which leaves trains as the only one other option for travel. The town is on the route from Hua Lumphong station in Bangkok to Aranyaprathet. There are two third-class only trains in each direction every day. The first departure from both stations is around 06:00 and the second just after lunch.
The bus station, along with most of the shops and hotels in town are either on or very close to Suwannason Road. The Chanthra Hotel and the Travel Hotel plus a Big C Superstore are within walking distance of the bus station. The inimitable rock formations at Lalu are the highlight of the attractions in the locality.”
