“Bueng Kan is a small city that sits along the banks of the Mekong River in northeast Thailand, around 750kms from Bangkok and nearly halfway between Nong Khai and Sakon Nakhon. It has its own bus station, with six buses per day making the 9 to12-hour drive between Bangkok Mochit and Bueng Kan.
Nakhon Phanom Airport makes it possible to fly into the area and take a local bus or taxi to Bueng Kan, which is around a two and a half hour drive away. Local buses run along Thailand Route 222 from the city to Nong Khai, Nakhon Phanom and other destinations in the vicinity.
Bueng Kan’s bus station sits on highway 212 just southeast of Route 222 and close to the Bueng Kan Provincial Court. The bus station has a small, covered waiting area and ticket booth, though not much else. There is a Tesco Lotus just down the street to buy snacks and an ATM on the opposite side of the street. Buses tend to fill at times, so it is best to book online.
There are a few places of interest in and around Bueng Kan, such as Wat Ahong Silawad, Wat Sawang Arom, Chao Mae Song Nang and Nong Gud Thing (home to over 250 aquatic animal species). There are a number of places to stay while here, including the Maenam Hotel, Samanmit Hotel and Bueng Suan Resort.”
